Haiti Earthquake Relief EffortsOn January 12, 2010 the Caribbean island nation of Haiti was devastated by an earthquake measuring 7.0 on the Richter scale that struck near the capital, Port-au-Prince. There are reports of mass destruction and estimates of 3 million people affected by the quake including 50,000 or more dead. Aftershocks, including a 6.1 quake on January 20, continue to rock the country. On January 22, President Obama signed legislation that allows taxpayers to receive tax benefits for the 2009 tax year for making monetary donations to Haiti relief efforts between January 11 and March 1, 2010.
